DAVID COMBS

I first saw David Combs 2 years ago, outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where I normally play.

He was working on a painting, while displaying another.

I've seen lots of painters out there, some of them very talented.  But I was deeply impressed with the young man's painting.

So much so, I asked him how much he was asking for the work.

Although his price was more than reasonable, I wasn't prepared to shell out for a masterpiece, so I let it go.  And regretted it later.

The next week David was back.  This time I was determined to buy a painting, and I found that I could afford two small works he had with him, and I bought them both.

I spoke with David, as I speak to many people out there in the WORLD.  Especially the gifted ones.  I was totally intrigued by him, his work, and his artistic goals.  We fast became good friends. Always, as we speak passersby stop in their tracks, amazed by his unique style, and his paintings that rivet the eye to them, commanding you to LOOK!

People seem to agree his style is somewhere between M. C. Escher, and Salvador Dali.  I'd throw in the photo-realist, Richard Estes, into the mix.  David himself says he is greatly influenced by Vermeer.  Whatever his influences, what comes out is an incredibly original style, and almost supernatural technique.

Always, his work arouses the fascination of everyone, young and old, that encounter him.

Who else could it have been?

One day he was working on this one:

I knew I had to have it, and I bought it on the spot, the money be dashed. (That's my equipment over his right shoulder).

That painting became the cover of my latest CD, Classical Guitar Volume III.

Since then, I have bought 2 more original Combs:

His paintings increase in value, as people clamor for them.

I've asked him to please hurry up and get really famous - my 5 original Combs are my retirement plan.

I'm proud to know David Combs, and he is an artist of the first order.

His paintings belong INSIDE the museum, not OUTSIDE it.  That is an error that I feel sure will one day be corrected.

I'm glad to represent his work here on my site, and also on the front cover of my latest release, Classical Guitar Volume III.

Purchasing the CD will give you the opportunity to have a small print of this amazing painting of the MET,

a building that has been painted innumerable times, but never with such flair and originality.

Of course, you'll also get a fantastic classical guitar CD, but this page is all about David Combs, the fascinating young genius from Texas.
